RECORDING!
Currently recording new material at Rock-box studios.
Where the majority of songs over the summer were recorded with drum machines, electric/acoustic guitar and vintage synthesizers these new compositions/recordings mark the triumphant return to the regular steel beans (vocal/guitar/bass/drums/percussion and maybe an organ or piano) instrumentation.
Some of these songs were written in the last two months while a few others just in the last week so it is especially exciting and spontaneous.

"Smash Your Phone"
                                                                                                                                              Today a song was written/recorded establishing a very valid statement in these times.when you can't even carry a conversation anymore without looking back to see the person your trying to talk to is texting or actually talking to a bluetooth while you search for a sincere answer to every question they ask. In the old days they had the telegram, 1980's: the pager. I think "Smash Your Phone" is as relevant as a social observation within a song has ever been.
Historically speaking, being based on the current communications trend it preserves the 2000's as the era of text messages, and getting calls from people that are upstairs in your house asking how to text.

The drums are from a cheesey 1964 church Organ metronome set to: "Teen Beat" with the EQ dialed in with boosted lows and mids almost making a 40+ year old machine sound much like modern techno or dance music (at least to my minimal knowledge and idea of the aforementioned genres) 

After the drums a mild fuzz bass guitar was added  that rides the quarter notes with a blend between staccato notes and bluesy slides that run between octaves.

I then put my 1963 U.S.  silvertone jaguar copy into the one of my two 60 watt solid state Sunn SL-160's that still has the original Sunn loudspeaker in it. Of course a SHURE 57 close mic'd to the curve of the cone, because I wanted a gritty but tight tone that was raunchy but not too much gain to the point of losing the percussive quality of the guitar strings altogether(something I am rarely fond of) The guitar was only played over the verse to build up and drop the dynamics of the song.

Tambourine was layered over the organ metronome tambourine that was already there to give it more space.

The Lyrics are inspired by the downfall of communication
via disposable technology fads, in an industry where your phone or computer is outdated/obsolete or off the manufacturing line by the time you purchase it.
Even though a simple cheesey pop song like  "Smash Your Phone" appears to be spotlighting a small problem, it is in essence the same negligence that when escalated takes away from one's character, and as a result each generation will probably have even less one on one conversations/relations than the last until we no longer know eachother or ourselves because were so into our little gossip devices we've forgotten how to articulate or emphasize  anything of  importance.
Although this is definitely not the first song to make this point about phones, it is however quite possibly the first to make mention of wanting to throw another guy's phone into the Puget Sound, that seems good enough.

The Song was recorded in early June 2011 and sat around the vaults collecting dust untouched without vocals until there was time off from rehearsing,performing and recording new songs  and suddenly I had a strong point point to make and a concept driving the song and lyrics (yes,sometimes it helps if you actually have something to sing about)
So like I'll often do I searched for songs in the archive that I had cut in the last 5 months entirely with all instruments but no vocals recorded or written.After hearing my choice of instrumentals I decided that the teenage and new wave/pop feel of this song was ultimately  appropriate for a song about cellphones and texting, it could have been born over one of those other songs, it could have been a jazz or a country song but I didn't think that would come across as funny.

 Vocals were sung through a shure super-pro 50 and for the slapback echo I used a Way Huge AQUA-PUSS analog delay.
Two backup vocals were added to emphasize certain phrases.

"Smash Your Phone" will be included in a collection of songs intended to be completed and pressed and released in January 2012.
